Theme: Nostalgia

'Tis the season for nostalgia! Here at Ratrock we're thinking not only about the wistful sadness that comes with the holidays, but also about the use of older mediums to produce contemporary art. Just finished your Photogravure print class or Photo I prints in the darkroom? Send us your art work! Collaging vintage magazines as a stress buster from finals? Send it in! Working hard on your Shakespeare monologue? We wanna see it! All mediums are welcome! Theme: Displacement

Living in New York we constantly come into contact with individuals that are displaced from usual society. We rush by them rather than stopping to notice, made uncomfortable by inequity or the lack of cash on our persons. Though seemingly remote from our own experience, all of us have felt feelings of otherness, of displacement or discomfort, and these are feelings that connect us to everyone around us. We have all experienced those transitions that make us uncomfortable, that remove us from stability and take us into the unknown. We are calling for art that connects with these themes in honor of Hunger and Homelessness Awareness in partnership with Project for the Homeless to reckon with both each individual sets of feelings which create ties between us. All mediums welcome! Theme: Intimacy

What is intimacy? A close familiarity or friendship, a private cozy atmosphere, the birds and the bees? What does it mean to have "intimacy issues"? Does intimacy equal love? What is love? (baby don't hurt me?)  Whether you're a hopeless romantic, a cynic, or somewhere in between,  join us in pondering these cringe worthy questions post-Valentines day! All mediums welcome! WORK DUE BY FEBRUARY 28. Shortly after there will be a showcase of all your beautiful work at CU Records. </3

Theme: Protest

This is Ratrock’s first monthly, themed, call to artists. We will post about the theme on the 1st of each month and submissions will be due on the 25th. At the end of the month we will feature all of your wonderful work in a gallery on the site. The call is open to artists of all disciplines! 

In light of recent political events, this month’s theme is “Protest”. Throughout history, art has been utilized as a means for reacting to socio-political issues and prompting social change. The gallery below features crucial works of protest art concerned with a variety of issues from Abortion to the Vietnam War. Whether it’s photographs from a recent protest you attended, a punk song about Trump, or an interpretive dance about women’s rights, we want to see how you speak out and stand up for what you believe in
