The MaMa Project is a full evening-length, student choreographed dance piece. This year's choreographer, Colette Kelly, calls upon Pteropods, tiny sea snails whose fragile shells are dissolving from ocean acidification, as a lens to explore the fragility of life and dissolution.

Just as pteropods must contend with acidifying oceans, so too must humans figure out how to deal with sudden, fundamental changes in the unique, personal worlds that they construct for themselves.

What do we hold onto, and what keeps us buoyant, when the very conditions for our existence are fundamentally shifting? What is the tipping point for dissolution? What does it feel like to be completely out of control? Ultimately, this work will explore how the only way to make sense of getting the rug swept out from under our feet is simply to live in the marvelous now.

The MaMa Project is a satellite dance organization supported by Orchesis, Columbia University's largest dance group.

The MaMa Project is an outlet for a chosen choreographer(s) to explore and expand their creative process by developing their own complete evening-length work. It is an opportunity for dancers to be in a cast of a smaller size and a more intimate nature. Collaboratively, the group creates a new work through process-based choreographic methods that allow for originality, catharsis, and creativity.
