SUBMISSIONS DUE: Postcrypt

  • Postcrypt Art Gallery 1160 Amsterdam Avenue New York, NY, 10027 United States (map)

For this show, we ask you to consider furniture as something other than passive parts of the environment. How does furniture define certain kinds of spaces, and how does it organize the ways our bodies work, rest, and behave? Are there improvements to be made? Is it architectural? Does it have to be functional? What happens when furniture breaks down? How do we care for or hold onto it? How does it affect social situations? Can it be public or private? Is it stationary or mobile? Lastly, what kinds of furniture do we have access to- what can we make out of what we have?

(chairs, sofas, beds, trashcans, carpets, benches, tables, bean-bags, shelves, pianos, cupboards, futons, diner booths, ottomans, stools, vanities, bunk-beds, hammocks, cradles, chess tables, tv stands, desks, card tables, pedestals, nightstands, wardrobes, fireplaces, lamps, dressers, cabinets, drawers, dishwashers, chandeliers, bathtubs, sinks and beyond)

We’d like to keep submission parameters pretty open- sculpture, performance, textile, prints, paintings, drawings photo, video, writing, etc. The idea is to put furniture on display in some way- either through work that already explicitly involves furniture, or through the reframing of a work such that its relationship to furniture is drawn attention to. For example, what sort of furniture would a video need to be displayed/viewed? Maybe you have photos, drawings, or paintings containing furniture that you would like to include in the show.

Send submissions to postcryptartgallery@gmail.com by Sunday November 13th at 10pm with a description of your work and images if you have them. Anyone can submit! Feel free to pass this along to people you think might be interested. If your furniture pieces are non-transportable to Columbia campus we'd still love to have pictures or some other form of documentation. The show will take place on Friday November 18th in the basement of Columbia’s St. Paul’s Chapel from 6:30-9:30pm.
